What the Evidence Supports — and Where It Is Thinner
The health case for reducing indoor fine particulate matter is solid. Sizing: The Only Spec That Really Decides Performance
CADR — clean air delivery rate — is the volume of filtered air a unit produces per unit time, tested under a standard protocol, usually reported separately for smoke, dust and pollen. It is the only number that lets you compare across brands, and it is what you should size by.
Manufacturer "covers up to X square feet" claims are typically calculated at a low air change rate, often around two air changes per hour, and at maximum fan speed. Both assumptions are unrealistic. You will run it on a low, quiet setting, and for a room where air quality actually matters, four to five air changes per hour is the more useful target. In practice that means buying for roughly half to a third of the advertised coverage.
A quick way to size correctly
- Work out room volume: floor area × ceiling height.
- Multiply by your target air changes per hour — use 4 or 5 for a room that matters.
- Divide by 60 to get the cubic feet per minute you need. That is your minimum CADR.
- Then check that figure is achievable at a fan speed you can tolerate, not only at maximum.
The practical consequence is that two smaller units in different parts of an open space frequently outperform one large unit, because clean air delivery is not the only issue — air distribution is too. A purifier in a corner behind a sofa is filtering the corner.
Running Costs, Noise, and Features That Are Not Worth Paying For
Filters are the real cost of ownership. A purifier with cheap replacement filters and a slightly lower CADR often costs less over three years than a premium unit with proprietary $90 filters replaced twice a year. Price the filters before buying the machine, and check whether third-party equivalents exist.
Noise determines whether the machine runs. A purifier is only useful when it is on, and the setting people actually live with is the lowest one. Check the decibel rating at the lowest speed rather than the maximum, and be sceptical of any unit whose quiet mode is achieved by delivering almost no air.
Features to be sceptical of
- Ionisers and "plasma" stages. Modest particle benefit at best, and some designs generate ozone, which is itself a respiratory irritant. If it can be switched off, switch it off.
- UV-C. Air moving through the unit spends a fraction of a second near the lamp — far less contact time than germicidal disinfection requires.
- "HEPA-type" and "HEPA-like". Unregulated marketing phrases. Look for a true HEPA or H13 specification.
- Air quality displays built into the purifier. Usually a cheap sensor whose main job is to make the machine look responsive. A separate monitor is more trustworthy.
