Steel gauge, and why lower is thicker
Gauge measures sheet thickness inversely: 11-gauge steel is thicker than 14-gauge. The common quality line in home racks sits at 11-gauge, and the difference is not cosmetic — it changes how much the uprights flex under a racked bar, how much the whole structure moves during a heavy unrack, and how well the holes hold up over years of pin insertion.
Upright dimensions
2×2", 2×3" and 3×3" uprights are the three common sizes. Larger uprights are more rigid, but the more important consequence is compatibility: attachments are sized to upright dimensions and hole diameter, so the upright size effectively locks you into an ecosystem. A 3×3" rack with 5/8" or 1" holes has by far the widest range of first- and third-party attachments available.
Hole spacing
Standard 2" spacing is fine for squat height, where an inch either way rarely matters. Measure the Room Before Anything Else
The most common expensive mistake in this category is ordering a rack that does not fit. Ceiling height is the binding constraint, and the relevant number is not your height — it is your height plus the bar plus the pressing range plus clearance if you intend to add a pull-up bar.
- Ceiling height: most full racks need roughly 7'6" to 8' for comfortable pull-ups. Short racks and wall-mounted folding racks exist specifically for lower basements.
- Footprint plus working space: add at least two to three feet on the loading sides for plates and movement, more if you will use a bench.
- Door and stair access for the uprights, which ship long and heavy.
- Floor: a garage slab is ideal; upper floors need serious thought about load and noise, and a rack is not something to bolt into a suspended floor casually.
Measure the actual usable height under any beam, light fixture or garage door track, not the nominal ceiling. Garage door mechanisms in particular eat the exact space a pull-up bar wants.
Safety Systems, Especially If You Train Alone
If nobody else is in the building when you bench, the safety system is the most important part of the purchase.
