Melatonin Timing, By Direction

Melatonin works through a phase response curve: taken in the hours before your body’s natural melatonin onset, it advances the clock earlier; taken in the morning, it does the opposite. The same dose produces opposite effects depending on when it is taken, which is why timing relative to the destination matters more than the milligram figure on the bottle.

Traveling east — the generally harder direction to adapt to — a small dose in the destination’s early evening, before natural tiredness sets in, nudges the clock forward.
