What a Headband Is Actually Measuring
EEG measures voltage fluctuations at the scalp produced by synchronised postsynaptic activity in large populations of cortical neurons. The signal is tiny — microvolts — and it has to pass through cerebrospinal fluid, skull and skin, all of which blur it spatially before it reaches an electrode.
A consumer headband typically places two to seven dry electrodes on the forehead and behind or on the ears. That gives it a signal dominated by frontal activity, heavily contaminated by muscle tension, eye movement and blinking, and with almost no ability to localise where in the brain anything is happening. It is a real measurement of real electrical activity. It is also a very coarse one.
Frontal electrodes sit directly over the frontalis muscle and next to the eyes. Jaw clenching, frowning and blinking all produce signals far larger than the brain activity being measured. Good consumer devices filter aggressively for this, and it remains the dominant limitation of forehead-mounted EEG.

Neurofeedback: Two Very Different Things Sharing a Word
Clinical neurofeedback involves multi-channel EEG, an individually assessed protocol targeting specific frequency bands at specific scalp locations, and typically 20 to 40 supervised sessions. Its evidence base is contested even in that form — the strongest research area is ADHD, where results have been mixed and blinded trials have frequently failed to separate it from sham.
Consumer meditation feedback is a different thing wearing the same label. It classifies your state into coarse categories and gives you a sound that changes accordingly. That is biofeedback in a general sense and it is not clinical neurofeedback, and the evidence for one does not transfer to the other — particularly given that the evidence for the clinical version is itself unsettled.
The Benefit That Is Actually Real
Meditation has reasonable evidence for stress, anxiety and attention outcomes. The failure mode of meditation is not that it does not work, it is that people stop doing it within a fortnight because nothing observable happens and there is no feedback that you are doing it correctly.
A headband that makes a sound change when your attention wanders solves precisely that problem. It provides immediate, concrete feedback in a practice that otherwise offers none, and users frequently report meditating more consistently as a result. That is a genuine benefit and it is a behavioural one — the value is adherence, not neurological precision.
- Judge it as an adherence tool. Did you meditate more in the last month than the month before you bought it?
- Do not treat the scores as neurologically meaningful. A 'calm percentage' is a proprietary classification of a coarse signal, not a measurement of your mental state.
- Expect the novelty to fade. The most common outcome in this category is enthusiastic use for six weeks and a drawer thereafter.
- Check the subscription terms. Several devices gate most content behind a monthly fee, which over three years can exceed the hardware price.
EEG for Sleep Staging Is the Stronger Technical Case
Sleep stages are defined by EEG, which is exactly why wrist and ring trackers struggle with them — they are inferring brain state from heart rate and movement. A headband with EEG electrodes is measuring the signal that defines the thing, which is a meaningfully better position to be in.
The obstacle is comfort and compliance rather than physics. A device has to be tolerable enough to wear all night, every night, and dry electrodes shift as you move, degrading contact. Validation against polysomnography for consumer EEG sleep devices is better than for wrist wearables and still short of clinical. If sleep staging is your interest, this is the technically superior route with a real practical caveat.
Buying Checklist
- Is the raw signal exportable? Without it you only ever see a proprietary score you cannot check.
- How does it handle artefacts? Ask what happens when you clench your jaw; a good device tells you the signal is bad rather than scoring it.
- Three-year cost including subscription, not the hardware price.
- Comfort for the intended session length, and for a whole night if sleep is the use case.
- Does the marketing claim clinical outcomes? Consumer EEG headbands are not clinical neurofeedback and claims that blur the two are the clearest signal to be cautious.
