Certification Is the Only Claim That Means Anything
Water filter marketing runs on unfalsifiable phrases: "advanced filtration," "removes up to 99% of contaminants," "purifies." None of these have defined meanings. The meaningful claims are certifications against NSF/ANSI standards, which specify test protocols, challenge concentrations and required reduction levels for named contaminants.
- NSF/ANSI 42: aesthetic effects — chlorine, taste, odour, particulates. Says nothing about health contaminants.
- NSF/ANSI 53: health effects — lead, cysts, VOCs and others. Certification is granted contaminant by contaminant.
- NSF/ANSI 58: reverse osmosis systems.
- NSF/ANSI 401: emerging contaminants including some pharmaceutical residues.
- NSF/ANSI P473: PFOA and PFOS reduction specifically.
The critical detail is that certification under a standard is not blanket coverage of that standard. A filter certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for cyst reduction has not been certified for lead. Check the specific contaminant claim, and prefer products listed in a certifier's searchable database over ones that only print a logo on the box.

Test Your Water Before Buying Anything
Filter selection is downstream of knowing what is in your water, and most people skip this step and buy on general anxiety instead. Two free or cheap sources of information come first.
- Your utility's annual water quality report — required in the US and published online. It tells you what is in the water leaving the treatment plant.
- A home test kit or a certified laboratory test — this is what tells you about your own plumbing, which is where lead almost always comes from.
That distinction matters enormously for lead. Municipal water usually leaves the plant lead-free; lead enters through service lines, solder and fixtures in older buildings. Your utility's report cannot tell you about your own pipes, so a point-of-use test at the tap is the only way to know. Choosing the Technology That Matches the Problem
Carbon block
Activated carbon adsorbs chlorine, chloramine, many VOCs and the compounds responsible for taste and odour. Certain carbon block filters are additionally certified for lead reduction, but this is a property of specific products rather than of carbon as a technology. Carbon does not remove dissolved minerals, nitrate, or hardness.
Reverse osmosis
RO pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane and offers the broadest contaminant coverage available at household scale, including dissolved metals, nitrates and most PFAS. The trade-offs are real: it produces wastewater, it is slower, it needs under-sink space and a storage tank, and it removes beneficial minerals along with everything else. Many systems add a remineralisation stage for taste, which is largely a palatability question rather than a nutritional one for people with an otherwise adequate diet.
Distillation
Boiling and condensing removes essentially everything non-volatile, including metals and salts. It is slow, energy-intensive, and does not remove compounds that boil below water. Its practical niche is small-volume drinking water where breadth matters more than convenience.
Ion exchange and softening
Softeners exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium, solving scale and appliance longevity. This is a plumbing benefit, not a health filter — softened water is not treated water, and a softener removes neither lead nor PFAS. Specific ion exchange resins do target particular contaminants such as nitrate or certain PFAS, but that is a different product from a household softener.
Maintenance Is Where Filters Actually Fail
An expired filter is not a neutral object. Carbon filters lose capacity as adsorption sites fill, and a saturated filter can eventually release accumulated compounds back into the water. Filter cartridges also develop biofilm, particularly in pitchers left at room temperature and used intermittently.
- Replace on schedule, by volume where the manufacturer specifies it, not when the taste changes. Taste tracks chlorine removal, which fails long after health-contaminant capacity does.
- Refrigerate pitcher filters between uses, and do not leave one standing full for a week.
- Sanitise RO storage tanks at the interval the manufacturer specifies. A neglected tank is the weak point of an otherwise excellent system.
- Flush a new cartridge per the instructions before drinking. Carbon fines in the first litres are normal and harmless but unpleasant.
- Run the tap for 30 seconds after long stagnation in older buildings before filling anything, filtered or not.
