Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an Ayurvedic adaptogenic herb with more rigorous human clinical trial data than nearly any other botanical supplement in the stress and performance category. "Adaptogen" is a term coined to describe substances that help the body resist physical and psychological stressors — a vague functional definition — but ashwagandha specifically has been tested in double-blind, placebo-controlled RCTs for cortisol reduction, anxiety, sleep quality, testosterone, muscle strength, and thyroid hormone modulation, with consistently positive findings across independent research groups.
The primary bioactive compounds are withanolides (steroidal lactones) and withaferin A — concentrated in the root of the plant. Root extract standardized to withanolide content (7–10%) is the clinically studied form; products using leaf extract (Sensoril standardizes to withanolide glycosides from leaf+root) have a different compound profile and slightly different effect distribution. KSM-66 (root-only, 5% withanolides minimum, Ixoreal Biomed) is the most extensively clinically studied branded extract and the benchmark for ashwagandha research.
