The active compounds are hericenones (found primarily in the mushroom's fruiting body) and erinacines (found primarily in the mycelium — the root-like underground network). Both compound classes cross the blood-brain barrier as small molecules and upregulate endogenous NGF (Nerve Growth Factor) synthesis in the brain.
