Cognitive Acceleration Collaboration 2023 (Cambridge, UK)
A more recent 84-adult RCT examining acute and longer-term cognitive effects of lion's mane in healthy adults aged 50-75. Working memory tasks showed significant improvement at 3 months. Interestingly, the study also tested an acute administration protocol (single high-dose) and found detectable working memory improvements within 60 minutes of a 1.8g erinacine-enriched mycelium dose â suggesting some effects may be more immediate than neurogenesis models would predict.
Fruiting Body vs Mycelium: The Critical Distinction
This is where the supplement market creates significant confusion. Many lion's mane products on the market are mycelium grown on grain substrate â and because the mycelium is not separated from the substrate, what you're actually buying is largely grain (starch) with some mycelial material mixed in.

Erinacine A has been particularly well-characterized. It induces NGF synthesis in the locus coeruleus (a brainstem nucleus controlling attention and stress response) and hippocampus, and has shown neuroprotective effects in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease models in rodents. Human translation of these effects remains an active area of investigation.
