Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the most evidence-backed adaptogens — meaning it has enough RCT data to take seriously, not just traditional use claims. The primary mechanism is modulation of the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), which governs the cortisol stress response. By reducing excessive cortisol output, ashwagandha has downstream effects on anxiety, sleep quality, testosterone (which is suppressed by chronic cortisol elevation), and physical performance.

The critical caveat: extract quality separates therapeutic ashwagandha from expensive root powder. Most of the positive RCT data uses KSM-66 or Sensoril — proprietary extracts with standardized withanolide content. Generic ashwagandha powder has variable withanolide content and inconsistent results.
